She turns on the television and puts on a CD to kill the distracting silence. Then she signs on to the Evergreen Internet Academy’s Web site and settles in for five or six hours of work before going to bed. That’s a routine that works for Raena —- even her mother says so. The 16-year-old has been taking the bulk of her classes online since eighth grade. She made the switch from Frontier Middle School because respiratory problems were making her miss weeks of school. http://geoffandwen.com/Blind/newsarticle.asp?u_id=1938

The sixth-grader from L’Anse Creuse Middle School-North is one of more than 130 students whose parents bought the devices after officials encouraged parents to assist a pilot program that lets students use the devices regularly in class. ‚I saw how all my friends had one and that they were having so much fun with them, so I wanted one, too,‘ she said. ‚I use it for lots of things. Like in social studies, I use it for writing essays. It’s more fun since you are typing with a wireless keyboard.‘ http://www.detnews.com/2004/schools/0403/15/c05-91849.htm

With my Web-based version of Take Someone to Dinner students are also encouraged to choose three people. One is a legendary or dramatic figure, such as Shakespeare, Harry Potter, or Joan of Arc. Another one will be a personal hero, such as Daniel Radcliffe (the actor that portrays Harry Potter), Sammy Sosa, or Yuri Gagarin. The last one will be a local hero. The students will write stories about their three guests. Each story should be done in the five-paragraph essay style (this can be modified for younger students). They should have their resources cited, with a minimum of five resources (at least two of these should be books). The local hero story is a class project that will be turned into a web page, and the link submitted to the "Take Someone to Dinner" project. http://www.millennium.scps.k12.fl.us/myweb3/dinner.html http://www.techlearning.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=17701375

However, test results for 2003 show students at many cyber schools are not measuring up to state standards or to their peers who attend brick-and-mortar schools." Comment: Confusing article…not quite sure whether they are criticizing for-profit schools or online learning. Regardless…test results are being used as an indicator of weaker academic performance for online students. Before I would even entertain that as an indictment of online learning, I’d like to see how courses were organized, what types of tools were being used, if students were given assistance adapting to the medium, if instructors were competent facilitators, if learning outcomes were linked to media selection, if….and so on. http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,62662,00.html
